Today is a Good Day to Sploot

The dogs and I have been going for our early morning walks all summer, despite the heat. It’s a good walk — 1.65 miles up and down over 150 feet. Even on a cool morning, it can warm you up. And in our very hot summer, the dogs heat up quickly.

Zoe and Tegan have figured out how to beat the heat — they sploot!

A sploot is when a dog lays on its belly, with its legs stretched out straight behind it. Corgis are famous for splooting, but any dog can do it, if their legs are limber enough.

Well, okay. Zoe and Tegan aren’t technically splooting in the above photo. So Tegan demonstrated a perfect sploot below.

Tegan sploots in the soft damp grass to cool off.

Tegan’s ability to sploot is one of the things that makes me suspect that she has some corgi in her.

Zoe was a little jealous that I showed Tegan splooting, so she did a more advanced sploot when we got home.

Zoe demonstrates a sophisticated sploot-with-head-to-the-side. This one is for advanced splooters only. Do not try at home.

Zoe has always had a few jealousy issues.

But that cool damp grass felt so good on their bellies that I thought I ought to share.

Stay cool. Sploot when you can.
