Red-Tailed Hawk in Backyard

Red-Tailed Hawk in Backyard

I was on the phone with my son Sunday when the dogs went berserk. Looking into the backyard, I saw why — an enormous Red-tailed Hawk was sitting in the top of the Russian-olive tree in our back yard, lusting over the birds scattering from our feeder.

With a hurried excuse to my son, I snatched up my ever ready camera and took exactly one shot of the hawk:

Large Red-tailed Hawk taking off. The bird is brown on its upper surfaces and head, with a brown leading wing edge. The underside of its wings and chest are white, with bars on the underside of the flight feathers.
The hawk has leapt from the upper branches of the tree and is the first big down stroke needed to get airborne. It has jumped a bit to the side, so its left wing has pushed down harder and farther to compensate and is now under the hawk, giving the photo a lot of motion.

Not bad for fifty feet away and through a glass door.
