American Dipper

American Dipper

There are several American Dippers wintering under bridges across the greenbelt west of Denver.

They wade in the icy water to catch small crustaeceans.

Small grey pudgy bird with starling white eyebrows - an American Dipper - stands in rushing water.

Sometimes they just put their heads in.

Small grey bird - an American Dipper -puts its head into an icy rushing stream.

And sometimes they go all the way under and walk along the bottom of the rushing creek.

Small grey bird is almost completely submerged in the icy water of a rushing stream as it hunts for small crustaceans.

  1. Oh, I’ve never seen an American Dipper. So cool! If possible, could you tell me where this is so I can try to see them before we leave the state?

  3. Dippers are such fascinating and entertaining birds. I’m too far east to ever see an American Dipper, but I’ve seen the nominal Dipper species in the UK and could watch for hours. Thanks for sharing!
