Insomnia has it’s advantages…

One of my dogs gets anxious when the wind blows, which it has done a lot here this summer. When it blows at night, she gets me up so she can go lie down in the backyard. This calms her; no idea why.

But then I’m up. And if it’s close to dawn, I just stay up, and start my day. One of those mornings, the dog had settled down and gone back to bed. I was sitting at the breakfast table with the sun not quite up yet. I happened to look out the window and saw a Cooper’s hawk streak across the backyard. I grabbed my ever-ready camera, and went outside to see what was going on.

Low light of dawn shows the rear view of a grey-backed, grey capped raptor with dark bands on her tail. She has a sharp-looking yellow and black hooked beak, and yellow legs. She is sitting on a wooden picket fence.

I don’t know if she had tried for one of the bunnies that venture into the yard, or a small bird, or what. But she had come up empty taloned, and landed on the fence.

Low dawn light. Front view of the same bird as above, but her chest is brown with white speckles. She has a sharp-looking yellow and black hooked beak, and yellow legs. She is turning around on a wooden picket fence.

She worked herself back around …

Low dawn light. The hawk has completely turned around on a wooden picket fence. She Is gathering herself for launch.

… did a quick pre-flight check …

Low dawn light. Side view of the same bird as above. She has launched herself from the wooden picket fence, her striped wings stretched over her head.. Her yellow legs are fully extended behinde her and there is a tuft of white at the base of her tail.

… launched herself …

Low dawn light. Side view of the same bird as above. the grey upper surfaces of her wings are visible with her downstroke as she pushes against the air.. Her legs are tucked under her tail. The wooden picket fence is visible in the background.
In full flight now, the hawk flies by, on her way out of the yard.

… and was gone.

Almost made it worth getting up before the sun.

  1. What an incredible chance sighting, all beautifully lit. Thank you for sharing-even if it meant you were robbed of precious sleep. Hopefully a nap will assuage the situation.

    1. I was so lucky she decided to fly right by me. Definitely made getting up early worth it.
